All Very Goods, Justice Bouquet Bandana

Based in Washington, D.C., All Very Goods explores identity and representation through visual metaphors of African-American history, adaptation and cultural evolution.

This bandana features a bouquet of daisies and black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia Hirta), flowers that are both native to Texas and both typically in full bloom during June, coinciding with the month of the Juneteenth announcement (General Order Number 3 on June 19th, 1865). Both daisies and black-eyed Susans have been used for thousands of years in Native American ritual and medicine, traditions that would have been shared with enslaved men and women who then used these flowers to the benefit of their communities.

Symbolically the daisies represent endurance and beauty in harsh environments, and are seen to ward off negative energy and provide protection. Black-eyed susans were said to also possess protective qualities. The flowers with their bright petals and dark centers have come to represent resilience and justice.
