Barkley L. Hendricks was walking through the Parisian neighborhood of Place Pigalle when he encountered these two men.
In an interview in the bookBirth of the Cool, Hendricks remarks, “There was a style at the time with the long, slit-back suits that you saw a lot of tall, graceful African brothers wearing, and these gentlemen were graceful enough to allow me to photograph them.” Hendricks composed this painting from photographs of these two as they posed in front of an Art Nouveau entrance to the Paris metro. Paying special attention to details, as always, including the folds in one figure’s suit and the texture of the other figure’s denim, Hendricks presented a set of sartorially smart men.
Hand-printed on 100% preshrunk cotton, this APB’s (Afro-Parisian Brothers) Long Sleeve celebrates Hendricks’s legacy and the Frick’sBarkley L. Hendricks: Portraits at the Frick exhibition, on view at the Frick Madison through January 7, 2024.
