Stone Churches of Ethiopia is the accompanying catalogue for the 1978 exhibition, Stone Churches of Ethiopia: Photography by Jim Payne.
This exhibition catalogue chronicles photographer Jim Payne's 1973 experience in the Ethiopian village of Lalibela, where he encountered eleven remarkable stone churches. These churches, with their "unique designs, carved interiors, painted Byzantine interiors, and elaborated ceremonies...," were captivating to Payne and led him to visit Ethiopia three times to provide extensive documentation of not only these spaces and their religious objects.
