SUHREALIST, Lift Every Voice All-Weather Net

This piece from Boston-based artist Glen Glaines is informed by the legacy of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League flag and the David Hammons African American Flag (1990).

Gaines uses the basketball net as both symbol and site, highlighting Black excellence in sports while simultaneously planting a flag that signals our collective greatness beyond the arena. The Lift Every Voice Basketball Nets are part of a larger conceptual series titled Networth, which explores basketball, identity, value, and community through the symbolism of the net.
