ABOUT THIS EXHIBITION
Centering the ancient mathematical study as a point of artistic inquiry, Geometries explores how artists of African descent have used lines, shapes, and the spaces between to convey emotion, express identity, or work through formal concerns. Whether conjuring figures from basic shapes or obscuring perception with abstract compositions, the thirty artists in Geometries translate the breadth of the study—grid-like city maps, West African textiles, patterned flower heads, and sonic vibrations—into a shared visual vocabulary. Through that common language, the artists in this exhibition impart meaning onto material, opening new interpretive avenues for viewers in turn.
