Founded in 2024 by Ingrid Nelson,KINNANM is a creative practice that merges scent, sculpture, and memory.Thename is drawn from the Haitian words for kindred (kinanm) and soul (nanm), groundingthe brand in Haitian heritage. Inspired by the beauty and depth of African diasporic traditions,KINNANMcreateshandcraftedobjects that honor ancestry and celebrate lineage— bringing the sacred into the everydayandbridging art and ritual in ways that feel modern, intimate, and human.
Inspired by the Mukudj masks of the Punu people, who primarily reside in Gabon and surrounding regions of Central Africa, this sculpted candle honors their artistic and spiritual legacy. Mukudj masks, with their serene expressions, high foreheads, and elaborate coiffures, represent idealized female ancestors and embody beauty, wisdom, and connection to the spirit world. Traditionally, these white-painted masks are worn in dance ceremonies to honor the dead, ensure community well-being, and bridge the gap between the living and ancestral spirits.
Crafted from high-quality soy wax, this 22 oz candle captures the elegance and sacred artistry of Punu traditions. Though currently unscented, a scented version will be available soon. More than just decor, this sculpted candle is a way to celebrate these traditions and share knowledge about the beauty and cultural heritage of the Punu people through a unique new form.
