Completed during Stephanie Weaver’s time as an artist in residence at the Studio Museum, Hallelujah envelops the viewer in a moment of collective rejoice.
Weaver’s dynamic approach to capturing moments of joyful reflection and praise brings together figuration and abstraction. The congregation, amidst a spiritual ritual, fills the picture plane. The elongated stacked forms follow the plywood’s grains and the verticality of the panel, each figure inseparable from the negative space around them, resulting in an overall sense of movement. The artist further embraces the material using stains that allow the grain to remain visible while serving as a skin tone for the figures’ faces.
Stephanie Weaver is a 1971-72 Studio Museum in Harlem Artist-in-Residence Alumni.
