Featured in the Works of Clay by David MacDonald exhibition here at The Studio Museum in 1979, MacDonald's work spans the complete spectrum of ceramic forms of a utilitarian nature. For over thirty years, MacDonald has drawn inspiration from the vast creative traditions of the African continent. MacDonald notes examples of surface decoration present in the different ethnic groups of sub-Saharan Africa including but not limited to pottery decoration, textiles, body decoration, and architectural decoration.
